Snow beat against the reinforced windows of the laboratory while nighttime alarms echoed through the underground corridors. Beomgyu sat on a workbench, twirling a wrench between his fingers.
"Did you know that I would be much happier if I had never met you?"
Yeonjun didn't even look up from the reports.
"Funny. I was thinking the exact same thing."
"Liar."
"Why?"
"Why were you staring at me when I got a haircut?"
Yeonjun finally raised his head.
"And you told me."
Beomgyu's face immediately fell, and Yeonjun went back to work, hiding a smile.
Months ago, they could barely be in the same room without arguing. Now they shared the same department, the same apartment, the same couch during late-night research sessions, the same bowl of ramen. Not that they admitted to being comfortable with it.
The coffee maker beeped. With a grumble, Beomgyu commented:
"Your coffee is awful."
"Then stop stealing mine."
"I don't steal."
"You wrote your name on my mug."
"Because she lives with me now."
"It's a mug."
"She chose me."
Yeonjun rolled his eyes.
A nearby monitor displayed data on the attacks that continued to occur throughout the city. Deaths, disappearances, creatures that no one could explain. The weight of it all remained on them all.
But for a few minutes, it seemed distant.
Beomgyu approached Yeonjun's chair from behind and rested his chin on his shoulder to look at the screen, naturally. Automatic, even. As if he had always belonged there.
"...You miscalculated that."
Yeonjun let out a short laugh.
"I didn't calculate it."
"Yes, he calculated it."
"Then correct it."
"Soon."
Without moving away, Beomgyu reached over his hand to grab the keyboard.
Outside, Vladivostok continued to freeze. Inside, the laboratory held enough secrets to destroy the world.
But at that moment, nothing seemed more dangerous than the way neither of them wanted to separate.
