John H. Watson

Dr. John Hamish Watson (MBBS) is Sherlock Holmes's best friend and assistant, as well as a former British Army doctor. Before marrying Mary Morstan, he lived with Sherlock at 221B Baker Street, a flat they rented from Mrs. Hudson. He lived with Mary, with whom he worked, before a romantic relationship developed between them.

John is exceptionally brave, resourceful, and practical. He is fiercely loyal to Sherlock and will generally, though not always, do as he is asked, showing great concern for his well-being. Sherlock also cares for John. Furthermore, he is very altruistic and modest, as he takes enormous personal risks to help Sherlock Holmes and is quite skeptical of his partner's ideals. He is very sarcastic and has a peculiar sense of humor.
John copes with a lack of stimulation almost as well as Sherlock, with the difference that when Sherlock is bored, he expresses his frustration openly; when John feels that "nothing ever happens," he isolates himself and shows a strong tendency toward depression (possibly exacerbated by his post-traumatic stress). He is skilled at interpreting people through their facial expressions, whereas Sherlock relies on their surroundings, clothing, and personality traits to understand others.

John Watson has a sister, Harriet Watson (nicknamed 'Harry'), whom he doesn't see often. She was born in April and is currently in her forties.

John attended King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford. He studied medicine at King's College London, where he also obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree in 2004. John worked at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford and University College Hospital in London. [1] He trained at St. Bartholomew's Hospital as a British Army doctor and served as a Captain in the 5th Northumberland Rifles. John was deployed to Afghanistan, where he served for three years until he was shot in the shoulder. He recovered from the physical injury but was left with psychological trauma: a psychosomatic limp and an intermittent tremor in his dominant hand. The limp was so severe that he needed a walking stick, and he was soon discharged from the service.

John was receiving therapy for post-traumatic stress, but he wasn't making much progress. As part of his treatment, he was instructed to keep a blog to record his daily life, thoughts, and feelings as he adjusted to civilian life after leaving the army. However, he didn't keep it up, claiming that "nothing was wrong with him." [2]

John meets Sherlock Holmes through an old friend from St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Mike Stamford. Mike is now an instructor at the hospital, and upon learning that John needs a new place to live, he mentions that someone else had told him the same thing that morning. Mike takes John to a laboratory in the morgue to introduce them. Within seconds and with just a few fleeting glances, Sherlock deduces key details of John's life, and although both astonished and uncomfortable, John agrees to meet Sherlock the following day at 221B Baker Street.

After viewing the apartment, John expresses interest in renting it. He also discovers that Sherlock is a consultant to Greg Lestrade of Scotland Yard. Sherlock asks him to accompany him to a crime scene as his assistant. There, John witnesses once again Sherlock's astonishing deductive abilities, as well as his utter animosity toward the Scotland Yard investigation team. Sally Donovan even goes so far as to warn John to stay away from Sherlock.

Following this revelation, and having been abandoned by Sherlock at the crime scene, John returns to a main road to hail a taxi. Instead, an unfamiliar car intercepts him and takes him to a secure location to speak with Sherlock's brother, Mycroft Holmes. Mycroft never introduces himself, and due to his questionable attitude and methods, John is unwilling to take anything he has to say seriously. Mycroft offers him money to spy on Sherlock, which John refuses. "You are very loyal very quickly," Mycroft observes. He also mentions that John's therapist has reported a tremor in his left hand. However, observing the same hand during their conversation, Mycroft says, "You are under pressure right now, and your hand is perfectly steady. You are not tormented by the war, Dr. Watson. You miss it."

Despite warnings, John returns to 221B—before stopping by his old residence to retrieve his gun—and continues to assist Sherlock in the murder investigation. This leads them to chase a taxi on foot through London, an action that, while ultimately fruitless, helps Sherlock prove something. When faced with the apprehension of a potential suspect, John completely forgets his psychosomatic limp and manages to keep pace with Sherlock during the pursuit. Upon returning to Baker Street, Sherlock informs the landlady, Mrs. Hudson, that John will indeed be renting the flat.
John comes to Sherlock's rescue after he sets off alone to confront a serial killer. John uses a victim's mobile phone, left in his possession by the killer, to track his location via GPS. He shoots the killer from an adjacent building, believing Sherlock's life is in danger. He is an excellent marksman, able to fire through two windows and over Sherlock's shoulder, fatally wounding the suspect. Afterward, John moves into 221B and begins blogging about his adventures. Despite Sherlock's consulting role and John's military pension, money is still tight, leading John to seek employment at a medical center. There he meets another doctor, Sarah Sawyer, with whom he attempts to start a relationship. He offers to assist Sherlock with a new case, a task that reduces his working hours. Sarah covers for him when he falls asleep on the job, and John manages to secure a date with her. He recklessly accepts Sherlock's suggestion of a place to take her, and the three end up visiting a Chinese circus while Sherlock investigates the performers as part of his case. Later, John and Sarah are kidnapped by members of the Black Lotus Tong, who mistake John for Sherlock. Sherlock appears to clear the air and save them.

Later, it's revealed that John has been writing on his blog about specific Sherlock cases, and that it's gaining popularity, especially among the members of Scotland Yard. His next case is unlike any they've seen before. An anonymous terrorist is deliberately playing a game of wits with Sherlock. John helps him as much as he can, but his adversary is determined to blow up his victims if Sherlock doesn't solve certain cases within a certain time. John worries about the innocent lives hanging in the balance between Sherlock and the mysterious terrorist, and he's also concerned that Sherlock seems to have no regard for human life. An argument ensues between them, and John is furious at Sherlock's cold attitude, but he relents and continues to assist in the investigation.
Later, John is kidnapped by the terrorist—who turns out to be Jim Moriarty—and used as the final victim in a showdown with Sherlock. John attempts to sacrifice himself by attacking Moriarty, so that if the bomb detonates, it will kill him along with him. Moriarty sees that John values ​​Sherlock's life more than his own and, in turn, orders his snipers to take aim at Sherlock. This forces John to retreat. Sherlock removes the explosives from John's coat. Then, they both decide that it would be worth risking their lives to detonate the bomb and kill Moriarty with them. The tense standoff is interrupted when Moriarty's cell phone rings. Whatever the caller has to say is enough to make him withdraw his snipers and allow Sherlock and John to live another day.

Several months pass during which the couple investigates other cases, which John documents on his blog. It becomes popular, forcing them to avoid media attention. Even so, John is pleased with the success and tells Sherlock, who is clearly annoyed, that the blog helps him earn a living.

During this time, John ends his relationship with Sarah and starts looking for a partner again, with little success.

The two are summoned to Buckingham Palace by Mycroft to investigate a matter of delicate importance to the British royal family. A young woman close to the Queen has been the victim of compromising photographs taken in the company of Irene Adler, a dominatrix known professionally as "The Woman." Their mission is to recover the photos before Irene can use them to blackmail her. Irene proves to be very intelligent to Sherlock and manages to escape his clutches. John has his own suspicions about Sherlock's feelings for Irene.
When Irene turns up dead that Christmas, Sherlock is deeply affected by the news. John, puzzled and worried by his behavior, wonders if Sherlock is capable of feeling profound grief. Shortly afterward, Irene contacts John and reveals that she faked her death to escape her enemies. John insists that she tell Sherlock she is alive. She seeks his help, but John prioritizes Sherlock's well-being above anything she can offer him.

John still doesn't understand Sherlock's emotional capacity, but he still decides not to tell him that Irene Adler is dead, following Mycroft's suggestion to tell him she's been placed in a witness protection program in the United States. He also breaks police protocol and allows Sherlock to keep Irene's cell phone as a memento. John is unaware that Irene is alive and that, at the last moment, when she was about to be executed in another country, Sherlock came to her rescue.

Sherlock and John end up infiltrating Baskerville Military Base, a top-secret government facility, after being called in to investigate the details of a case. John is skeptical about getting through security with an ID stolen from Mycroft, but then uses his authority to persuade a young army officer to help Sherlock with his alibi. Sherlock is impressed by John's ability to improvise.

The case tests John's instincts as a doctor. His patient, Henry Knight, is clearly suffering from emotional trauma, which John attempts to treat with complete rest and a prescription. Furthermore, when Sherlock is in an unstable mental state, John remains calm. He tries to help Sherlock think rationally again, mentioning mental stress and overwork as possible reasons why Sherlock might have believed he saw a demonic dog on the moor with Henry Knight. Sherlock's difficult behavior eventually irritates him, but not enough to prevent him from interviewing Henry's therapist, Dr. Louise Mortimer, as a favor to Sherlock. Speaking with Mortimer, John expresses his concern for Sherlock's well-being despite their recent argument.
John inspires Sherlock to recognize the clue that solves the case: the use of acronyms to abbreviate the name of a government project. John mistakenly applies the idea to something irrelevant, but Sherlock then realizes that the clue for the word "hound" should actually be "HOUND." They then uncover traces of a failed experiment, codenamed after that project.

John's blog has led to increased media coverage of Sherlock, allowing him to solve increasingly important cases. John supports him, ensuring he can conduct himself amiably in public. He worries about the repercussions of Sherlock's sudden fame and warns him that the press will turn against him.
Shortly after, Jim Moriarty dramatically reappears and begins systematically destroying Sherlock's reputation and credibility. Meanwhile, Mycroft summons John to the Diogenes Club to warn him that Moriarty has placed four assassins in the vicinity of 221B Baker Street, though his motives remain unknown.
Moriarty fabricates a crime and plants enough evidence to make it appear that Sherlock committed it. With Scotland Yard wanting to arrest him, Sherlock asks John if he has any doubts and if he could be an imposter. John remains steadfast and loyal, though he adds, "I know you're sincere. No one could pretend to be such an annoying fool all the time."
When Scotland Yard arrests Sherlock, John flies into a rage. He punches a high-ranking officer, ensuring his own arrest. Sherlock makes a daring escape, and they flee together as fugitives. Desperately seeking a solution, they arrive at the apartment of journalist Kitty Riley, who claims she will soon publish a revealing story about Sherlock's life. Her source is a man claiming to be Richard Brook, an actor Sherlock hired to play his nemesis. In reality, it is Moriarty, who appears before them. John loses his temper, vehemently refusing to believe the lies Moriarty has concocted. Sherlock remains silent as John testifies to his innocence.

Moriarty escapes again, and the two men split up to investigate different leads. John returns to Mycroft, having realized that Kitty's story contains so much truthful information about Sherlock that someone must have tipped Moriarty off. Mycroft confesses that the government had him detained and interrogated, but that he would only cooperate if Mycroft told him about Sherlock's life. Moriarty is released. John leaves in a huff.
Sherlock hides in the Barts morgue, where John joins him. John then receives a call informing him that Mrs. Hudson has been murdered. John wants to return to her immediately, but Sherlock coldly tells him he must stay where he is. In a fit of anger, John insults Sherlock and storms out. Upon returning to 221B, he discovers that Mrs. Hudson is fine and that the call was merely a ploy to lure him away from Barts. He rushes back to the scene just in time to receive a call from Sherlock, who is on the building's rooftop, announcing his suicide. Sherlock tries to convince John that he is an imposter, but John, though confused and frightened, refuses to believe him. Sherlock then jumps from the roof, and John is unable to reach him until it is too late.
From that moment on, John believes Sherlock is dead, though upon visiting his grave, he expresses hope that Sherlock might somehow cheat death and return. Despite having discontinued therapy sessions, eighteen months after meeting Sherlock, John schedules another one due to his friend's death.

However, John manages to get over Sherlock's death and begins dating Mary Morstan. Just as he is about to propose to her, he realizes that the waiter was actually Sherlock in disguise. After nearly having a panic attack, he manages to calm himself enough to confront Sherlock, and the two get into a fight in the restaurant. They go to a small takeaway, where Sherlock explains everything, but John is still upset. Shortly afterward, he leaves with Mary, although she assures Sherlock that she will talk to John. Later, John is drugged and kidnapped by two men. When he regains consciousness, he finds himself inside a bonfire that is to be lit during the Guy Fawkes Night celebration. Mary receives a series of text messages with clues that allow her and Sherlock to rescue John seconds after the flames ignite and John is nearly burned alive. [7] Finally, he reconciles with Sherlock and, after managing to propose to Mary, asks him to be his best man [ 8 ].

During the months between learning that Sherlock is alive and his wedding, John helps Sherlock with several cases, and the two rekindle their old friendship. Sherlock's best man speech refers to these cases, and he manages to prevent the murder of one of John's wedding guests by re-examining them while speaking about them. At the end of the reception, John discovers that Mary is pregnant and that he is going to be a father. [8]

However, their relationship hits a rough patch when, while investigating a businessman named Charles Augustus Magnussen, he discovers that Mary is a former CIA agent. She shoots Sherlock, but he tricks her into confessing to John. Unable to bear it, he distances himself from her, referring to her not as his wife, but as a client.

On Christmas Day that year, Sherlock invites John and Mary, who is very pregnant, to lunch at his parents' house, where they reconcile.

Mary later gives birth to a healthy baby girl, named Rosamund Mary Watson, with Sherlock, Molly, and Mrs. Hudson as godparents. Unfortunately, Mary is tracked down by a member of the assassination team she was once part of and is forced to leave John and Rosamund behind while she travels the world at random. Sherlock and John track her down at John's suggestion, but they are followed by AJ, the fellow assassin she was fleeing, though they manage to escape with their lives.
Later, at an aquarium, it's revealed that a government secretary, Vivian, gave an order during a fateful mission in Georgia (the country, not the state) that cost half of AGRA their lives, and she shoots Sherlock. Before the bullet can reach him, Mary intercepts it and dies from the gunshot wound. John doesn't appear until she's been wounded, blaming Sherlock for failing to protect her.
After Mary's death, John saw his life decline considerably. Even with the help of Molly and Mrs. Hudson, who helped him take care of his daughter, he became deeply depressed, even having constant allusions about Mary.

John has few close friends. The only one he knew in the army before going to Afghanistan is Bill Murray, the nurse who saved his life.

According to John, Mike Stamford and John were "kind of like friends" when they were students.

John also has feelings for Mrs. Hudson. Both Sherlock and John are angry with Mycroft for telling Mrs. Hudson to be quiet, and John worries about her after she is attacked by CIA agents. Since neither man gets along well with their families, they could form a sort of surrogate family between them.

On several occasions, it was assumed that John was homosexual and had a relationship with Sherlock. However, whenever someone mentioned it, John would correct them, in stark contrast to Sherlock, who never responded.

Expert physician: According to his CV, John is "able to recognize and provide immediate and appropriate treatment to a wide range" of diseases and dysfunctions, including "myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, pulmonary embolism and sickle cell crisis, deep vein thrombosis, acute asthma attack, severe exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, community and hospital-acquired pneumonia, seizures, poisoning/overdose, acute abdomen and postoperative oliguric hypotension."
Expert Marksman: Due to his military career, John is incredibly skilled with firearms, far more so than Sherlock or Lestrade, demonstrating the ability to calculate the distance and timing of a shot in fractions of a second across a large area with two windows in between, and mortally wounded his target while missing Sherlock, who was standing very close to the target. Expert Combatant: His military career has also given John skill in hand-to-hand combat. This skill is demonstrated when, with a single movement, he twists someone's arm and, as a medical expert, is fully aware of the injury and its severity.
