During the capture of a Tudor fortress, Griffith is informed of a powerful enemy leader holding back the final push into the inner citadel. He and his troops venture toward the fortress to survey the situation, arriving in time to free Guts from the clutches of the apostle Zodd. Ordering his men to retreat as Zodd slays the Falcons for their interference, Griffith cunningly makes his way to Guts to safety. However, Zodd blocks their path, leading the two to perform a claw attack, and Griffith successfully severs the beast's arm. Enraged, Zodd retaliates with his tail, knocking Griffith into a nearby pillar and rendering the White Falcon unconscious. As the demon begins its killing spree, he notices Griffith's dangling beherit, shocked to see that someone such as Griffith possesses the legendary "Royal Egg." Therefore, Zodd remains with his hand and departs, leaving Guts with a cryptic warning about a prophecy of inevitable doom that will befall him, if Griffith's dream ever collapses. Returning to Wyndham to treat his wounds, Griffith recovers and visits Guts on the castle terrace, where the latter is training. He begins to reflect on their encounter with Zodd, using it as proof of what lies beyond human comprehension. After Griffith's reflections, Guts asks why he risked his life for a simple soldier; perplexed by the question, Griffith counters by asking if he needs a reason every time he risks his life for Guts. Afterward, they are met by the King of Midland and his brother Julius, leader of the White Dragon Knights. Griffith, shortly after being introduced to the king's timid daughter, Princess Charlotte, caught her as she descended the terrace steps. After breaking her fall, Griffith is slapped by Julius for making contact with the princess, to whom Griffith apologizes for his actions with utmost insincerity.

Years later, the Band of the Falcon finds itself protected by a military garrison from a series of mercenary attacks. For three months, the Falcons are able to hold out at the fort, but with the defeat of Bazuso at the hands of a young mercenary named Guts and the subsequent blow to the garrison's morale, the Falcons relinquish control of the fort to the enemy and abandon their post. A day later, the Falcons spot Guts walking along a trail near their camp, and several decide to pursue him in hopes of claiming his newly acquired reward. One by one, they fall prey to Guts. Eventually, Casca too finds herself at the mercenary's mercy. With his then-closest confidant in danger, Griffith finally dons his armor and arrives on the scene, intercepting Guts's spear attack. He attempts to reason with Guts, but to no avail, leaving only the option of dismantling and incapacitating the swordsman. Intrigued, Griffith takes Guts to the nearby Falcon camp and orders Casca to lie down with the wounded mercenary to keep him warm. When Guts finally awakens , Griffith attempts to coax him into his arms, an offer Guts vehemently refuses. Seeking revenge, Guts gives Griffith a choice: if he can defeat Guts in a sword fight, he can claim the mercenary; however, if he loses, he will suffer a wound similar to the one he inflicted on Guts just days earlier. Not one to avoid violently acquiring the things he desires, Griffith agrees to Guts's terms and engages him in combat. Ultimately outsmarting his opponent, Griffith dislocates Guts's arm and claims the swordsman for himself as a newly recruited member of his mercenary group.

Griffith spent his childhood on the streets of Wyndham, the capital of Midland. The identity of his parents is unknown, but Griffith grew up among the common people, in such poverty that he couldn't afford a crust of bread. He played with other street children, picking up all sorts of junk and calling it his trophies. A sight that profoundly influenced Griffith's future—the sunlit royal castle rising above the dark city streets—made him promise himself that one day he would rule the kingdom. Around this time, he received the red beherit—in Griffith's memories, a magical "amulet" given to him by an old woman fortuneteller, who prophesied that Griffith would conquer the world. Griffith organized the Falcon Company, gathering several ambitious, like-minded individuals from the common people. His first comrades—later officers—were the miner Pippin, the circus performer Judeau, and the bandit Corkus. Casca, later Griffith's right-hand woman and the only woman in the company, joined the company by chance: Griffith saw a nobleman attempting to rape twelve-year-old Casca, cut off his ear, and handed the sword to Casca, leaving her to deal with the rapist. This act won Casca over, and she joined the company. At first, the Falcon Company desperately needed money for weapons and salaries. Griffith was shocked to see the corpse of a soldier, still a child, after one battle. He managed to secure the necessary funds from the Tudor Baron Gannon by becoming his lover—a relationship that was apparently repulsive to Griffith himself, but he believed it shortened a journey that would otherwise have taken many years.

The deaths of those who fought for his dream take a toll on him. To cope with their loss and ensure their deaths weren't in vain, Griffith begins to rely on cold logic and reason, prioritizing success over compassion—paradoxically expressing compassion for his comrades while suppressing it. Soon, he's completely apathetic to the deaths of his comrades. Even then, he still possesses his humanity and questions their immoral intentions, at one point asking Guts if he's cruel. The high regard he holds for him eventually takes a toll on his ego. Despite the love he shows his comrades, Griffith comes to the conclusion that they are nonetheless beneath him, viewing them as nothing more than tools to achieve his dream, and none of them meet his criteria for a true friend.
