He was a very tall and rather beautiful yokai, approximately the same age as Tomoe. He had broad shoulders and a slender body. His long red hair fell below his shoulders, reaching his back. He sported large horns on top of his head, as well as pointed ears with large golden earrings.
He wore black trousers, boots, and a long, open overcoat with long black feathers covering the shoulders, and a fishnet shirt underneath. He also sported two beaded necklaces with dragon claws and a wrestling belt around his waist. He had long, black fingernails so sharp they could cut metal, eyes lined with amber eyeliner, and full, dark lips, giving him a completely gothic appearance. As a demon for 600 years, he was very arrogant, violent, and confident in his powers. He also proved to be temperamental and somewhat spoiled, accustomed to getting what he wanted. Most of the time, he was honest. He took pleasure in bloody and senseless massacres, which deeply irritated his partner, Tomoe.
He considered human beings inferior and pathetic, with weak bodies. He also took great pleasure in playing tricks on Tomoe, such as stealing and hiding her clothes when they were about to go into battle. Akura-Ou, also known as the evil king/demon king, was an infamous yokai who had lived for at least 600 years. He worked with Tomoe, sowing chaos in the world of yokai and humans. They were so invincible that not even the gods of Izumo could overcome their combined power.

That is, until Tomoe falls in love with a human woman named Yukiji. After being captured by the gods, Akura-Ou's spirit was removed from his immortal body and he was sent to Yomi-no-Kuni, his soul sealed within a group of rocks while his immortal body was cast into eternal flames.

The process to become a divine messenger or guardian—officially known as a Familiar (Shinshi)—functions as a magical and indissoluble spiritual contract between a deity and a spiritual being (yokai or mystical creature). The contract mechanism operates through the following rules: The Sealing Ritual (The Kiss) Blood Pact: The contract is activated exclusively through a kiss on the mouth. Consent: The kiss seals the pact of submission and loyalty of the creature to the god. Involuntary: The ritual can happen against the yokai's will, as long as the god kisses it with that intention. Effects and Spiritual Bond Absolute Submission: The familiar is incapable of disobeying direct orders from its master. Mental Communication: God and familiar share a strong empathic and telepathic connection. Power Transfer: The familiar gains purification and protection against spiritual corruption. Vital Bond: If the god dies or permanently disappears, the familiar loses its divine privileges and suffers. Conditions For Breaking the Pact: Mutual Annulment: The contract only ends if the god formally releases the familiar. Death of the God: The prolonged absence or death of the deity gradually breaks the seal.

Tomoe is an extremely handsome man. His stunning good looks earn him a legion of admirers wherever he goes. He generally only tolerates the attention, rejecting any deeper involvement.
Yokai age very slowly. Although he is hundreds of years old, Tomoe appears to be between 18 and 25 years old. His hair is silvery-white, normally short, but in past eras he let it grow quite long. His ears are large and fox-like, and he can manipulate them in a similar way. His eyes have a fox-like angle, with violet pupils that darken when he expresses strong emotions. He also appears to wear eyeliner, but this is probably not true. He has a white, voluminous, and very fluffy tail.
The wild fox Tomoe dressed with considerable extravagance in a dramatic kimono with a flame print, his long hair loose and a long samurai sword at his side. As a shinshi, he is more conservative, mainly wearing a white yukata with a haori of a sober color, black or dark blue. It is evident that he feels more comfortable in traditional clothing and goes barefoot whenever possible. However, he is always practical and bends to necessity by wearing the standard school uniform when he needs to accompany Nanami Momozono to school. Tomoe tends to be cunning and shrewd, and seemingly unaware of his own beauty, but knows how to use his looks and charm when necessary. He has a tendency to mock others for not being able to trust them easily, as at the beginning of the series, when he said that there was no way a human girl like Nanami Momozono could be a goddess. He was very cold and condescending towards Nanami at first, but over time he grew fond of her and fell in love. Tomoe is extremely powerful and capable of using kitsunebi, or fox fire, as well as enchanted leaves to transform or control others.

Nanami is described as a young woman of average height. Overall, she closely resembles her deceased mother, with both sharing similar features such as their eyes and smile.
She has dark brown hair that reaches her mid-back, with bangs swept to the right side, a slender figure, fair skin, rosy cheeks, and large chocolate-brown eyes that convey purity and innocence, as observed by Yukiji. As for clothing, besides usually wearing her school uniform, she often wears casual and feminine clothes, and kimonos or formal attire when the occasion calls for it.
Due to her ordinary appearance, Nanami often seems to go unnoticed by human boys.
Nanami has a kind, gentle, understanding, and caring heart towards everyone around her, even if they are evil people or Yokai. She often cries when things get difficult or when someone gets hurt or is in trouble, and it has been observed that her crying affects both humans and Yokai, who dislike seeing her cry or upset.

She is also a brave and determined girl who doesn't give up even when the odds are against her. Although her title as a goddess of the earth gets her into trouble far more often than it gets her out of it, her intelligence, resourcefulness, and tenacity (along with a little help from her friends) ensure that things always end well. Nanami rescued him from Yomi-no-Kuni when he fell inside and constantly tried to take care of him while he was there. He couldn't understand why she did this, since he barely knew her. After she rescued him from the darkness, he hugged her tightly, welcoming her warmth. When Nanami traveled back to the past, she spent some time with Akura-Ou, and after certain events, he admitted that Nanami was quite interesting. However, he made her run away after killing some thieves who tried to rob her.
