Light Yagami⁴

Light Yagami 「夜神月, Yagami Raito?」 is the main protagonist of the series. He was the first son of Soichiro and Sachiko Yagami, and the older brother of Sayu Yagami. He was the owner of the Death Note.

Light finds the Death Note and uses it to kill criminals who mainly appeared in the news, then he began killing criminals himself. He later became known in Japan under the name Kira 「キラ, Kira?」 (based on the Japanese pronunciation of the English word Killer). He joined the police force to get close to his enemy L and finish him off. In the end, he is killed by Ryuk's Death Note on January 28, 2010.

LIGHT YAGAMI'S APPEARANCE
Height and build: 179 cm, slim but not frail; he has a light, athletic build, reflecting his discipline and self-control. He's not muscular in the action hero style, but rather elegant and well-proportioned.

Personality
Light is characterized as a bored, courageous, and intelligent boy. He is 17 years old at the start of the anime and manga, and despite being young, he is as confident in his own sense of logic and creativity as he is in regards to others. At the beginning of the story, he is presented to us as a person who, despite his intelligence and getting good grades at school, is frustrated by the iniquity that inhabits the world. Believing the world to be "rotten", he desires a means by which he can enact his justice and will to purge the world of all evil.

Light uses the Death Note with the sole purpose of cleansing the world of crime and injustice. Light's ultimate goal is to create a world that is free of criminals and populated only by people he deems responsible, hardworking and good, thus becoming the "God of the New World". However, despite the nobleness of his purposes, his methods are far from being approved by society and the authorities, considering him a maniacal and childish serial killer, who only seeks to satisfy his own ego.

Light is a determined and direct man with what he thinks, not caring at all about staining his hands with the blood of others of the people he has killed. This action concludes in the end that he is capable of doing anything in order to achieve his goal, this being one of the main causes of his corruption as a person.

As he uses the Death Note more, Light becomes more ruthless and twisted, to the point of not only lacking empathy, compassion or love towards others, but also developing a manipulative side where he even goes so far as to use his own family and people related to him to fulfill his purposes in something that he considers the most correct.

Throughout the series, Light is constantly trying to evade suspicion from L and the other detectives by keeping his identity as "Kira" a secret as much as possible and cleaning up the world of crime. The fact that he considers himself a god and knowledgeable about the law also adds to his distorted notion of reality that only he is best suited to judge humanity and direct it to follow a proper moral course, developing in him an extremist narcissism where he cares for no one but himself, a strong megalomania and a great arrogance which becomes evident once he is discovered.

Ohba said that Light was "a young man who could understand the pain of others" when he was the first to find the Death Note. Ohba said that if Ryuk had never come to the human world, Light would have become "one of the greatest police leaders in the world" who, alongside L, would work against criminals. Ohba describes Light's life as "ruins" once he obtained the Death Note, as he became a victim of the note "in many ways." Ohba described Light as having good intentions and a "very vain" character. Ohba also describes Light as having a "warped desire to be divine," having love for his family, and intending to transform the world into "a better place." Ohba added that he believes the debate over whether Light's actions were good or evil is "not very important." Ohba says that he personally views Light as a "devilish" character.
According to Ohba, Light sees Misa Amane, whom he uses as an accomplice, as a "bad person" who killed people, so he acts emotionally cold towards her and manipulates her. Despite this, she remains with Light even after they have lost their memories of being the second Kira.

Ohba said that his editor suggested the name "Yagami" to Light's family. Ohba said that he didn't feel "too concerned" about the meaning of the name (the kanji is "night" and "god"); he said that after he created the final scene in the manga, he "liked" that the scene he created would have a "deep meaning" in the name.

After Light's first trials, the people who support the killing of the criminals begin to know the killer as Kira, which is actually nothing more than the phonetic transcription into Japanese of the English killer (in Spanish assassin). Although the term was originally applied to Light Yagami; in reality throughout history there are various characters who are known in this way, partly due to the strategies of the original Kira, and partly due to chance. Thus, all the characters who act as judges instead of Light and/or under his orders can be considered Kira, although the motivations of each one may be different (from the creation of an ideal world to economic reasons, and even helping Kira himself).
