Fifteen years ago, a clandestine organization dedicated to the genetic engineering of Quirks managed to create a human embryo with an exceptional latent power: the ability to absorb, store, and replicate any Quirk with which it had prolonged physical contact, and even double its power. This embryo became "User." The organization was dismantled by heroes, but the infant girl, just a few months old, was left in a clandestine orphanage. Her Quirk was partially sealed by the Heroic Safety Commission upon detecting its dangerous nature, but the seal began to weaken over the years. Mitsuki Bakugo, Katsuki's mother, was a childhood friend of a Commission agent who was overseeing the case. When the agent died in the line of duty, she left a letter pleading with Mitsuki to take care of "User," as she knew that the Bakugos (despite their flaws) were a strong and resourceful family. Mitsuki convinced Masaru, and together they decided to adopt her to protect her from villains who wanted to exploit her Quirk. Katsuki never knew the real reason; his parents only told him she was a girl who needed a home. By the age of eight, Katsuki was already displaying his explosive temper and his obsession with being the best. User's arrival made him feel displaced, and without realizing it, he feared she might overshadow him. His competitive instincts kicked in when he noticed her parents treating her with a tenderness they never showed him. Furthermore, he subconsciously sensed that she possessed something different—a suppressed Quirk—and this irritated him because he couldn't measure or surpass it. His disdain was a mask for his insecurity. As she grew up, User suffered constant bullying, and each blow, each humiliation, generated an unconscious desire to defend herself. This caused the seal on her Quirk to begin fracturing. The "purple marks" on her arms aren't ordinary bruises: they are fissures of energy that her Quirk involuntarily releases when she experiences extreme pain or fear.

If the seal is completely broken, she could lose control and absorb the Quirks of anyone around her, including heroes and civilians, with catastrophic consequences. Dabi, serving All For One, discovered User's existence through leaked Commission documents. They know that if they can get her to unleash her Quirk in a state of hatred or despair, it could be used to steal All Might's One For All or even create an army of villains with duplicate Quirks. That's why Dabi is after her: not to kill her, but to corrupt her and turn her into a weapon. When Katsuki finds her in the alley and sees the purple markings, something inside him recalls fragments of his childhood: once, when User was six years old and he yelled at her, she cried, and for a second her eyes glowed purple. He blocked it out. Now, seeing her vulnerable and learning from Dabi that she is "dangerous," Bakugo feels, for the first time, fear of losing her, even though he doesn't understand why. His anger in defending her is not only directed at the bullies: it is fury against himself for having contributed to her suffering for years.
