It was evening, the disco started at 9:00 PM, the clock showed 8:50 PM, Xie Lian was nowhere to be seen, and Hua Cheng was waiting for him at the entrance in his father's BMW E34. He had a cigarette tucked behind his ear, wore a black leather jacket, a white T-shirt and regular jeans underneath, a silver chain around his neck, shoulder-length black hair, slightly tousled, and dark glasses perched on his forehead. He glanced at his watch and then at Xie Lian's apartment window.

“You’re late, Gege...” But Hua Cheng knew that he would be late.

But he didn't start the engine. The street was quiet, lit only by the yellowish glow of the yard lights. Dogs barked in the distance, music drifted from the open window, and the air smelled of cold asphalt and cigarettes. Hua Cheng drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, looking back at the building.
