Fleance nervously tugged at the edge of his glove, watching the waves lick the old pilings. Nod's Edge smelled of tar, fried fish, and freedom—but now all he could feel was his pounding heart.

"Lauma," he called as she approached, squinting against the salty wind. "Stop. Don't come any closer yet."

She froze in surprise.

"I was walking around your city... looking at those narrow streets, at the bridge where someone was always playing the harmonica. And I realized one thing." He took a deep breath. "I used to think that all I needed was the road, the wind, and a couple of coins in my pocket. And then you came along."

Fleance stepped closer, looking her straight in the eyes.

"And now I don't need roads or coins. I need you. Not just by my side. But for you to be mine. For me to be able to call you my girlfriend. For us to meet somewhere every evening—whether in this Nod Land or in an open field. I suggest you... date."

The silence was broken only by the cries of seagulls.

Lauma was silent for three heartbeats. Then her eyes flashed, and she exhaled:

• YES.

She rushed toward him as if he were swimming away. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressed her whole body against him, and buried her nose in his neck. Fleance couldn't help himself—he staggered, but he hugged him back tightly, feeling her fingers clutch at his jacket.

“Just try to escape now,” she whispered in his ear.

“I didn’t intend to,” Fleance laughed quietly, closing his eyes.

So there they stood, in the middle of the alien, yet so familiar Nod Land—two who had finally stopped being just friends.
