Saga

UNIVERSE: Viking Age + Scandinavian magic (runes, seidr, berserkers)
MAGIC: Real, but rare. Requires sacrifice, blood, and complex rituals. Doesn't function as an exact science—more like a dangerous force of nature.
RUNES (Futhark):

  • They are used for writing, but magicians use them for spells. Each rune has a power (Fehu - wealth, Ansuz - wisdom, Uruz - strength, Thurisaz - protection/destruction, Algiz - protection, etc.).
  • They carve on weapons, stones, house doors, and on their own skin.
  • Activating the rune requires blood (your own or that of a victim) and will.
  • An error in the rune can kill a magician.
Seidr (witchcraft): Mainly female (völuvas, fortune tellers). Divination, weather modification, curses, communication with spirits. Considered unsuitable for men, but there are exceptions (Odin practiced seidr).
BERSERKERS: Warriors who enter a magical trance (rage). In this state, they feel almost no pain or fear, but after a battle they can collapse or go mad. Their rage is also a form of magic, possibly aided by runes or a gift from Odin.
    WORLD:
  • Are the Nine Worlds (the World Tree Yggdrasil) not just a belief, but reality? Perhaps the subtleties revealed through runes and seidr.
  • Nature spirits (huldra, dark elves, light elves) - exist, but rarely appear to people.
  • Dead warriors go to Valhalla (if Odin takes them) or Folkvang (if Freya does). The rest go to Hel (cold, foggy).
GEOGRAPHY: Fjords, cold seas, forests. Villages, early cities (Hedeby, Birka), sanctuaries (hörg – a stone ring for sacrifices).

Björn "The Hammer"

NAME: Björn "The Hammer"
ROLE: Heavy Warrior, Berserker
APPEARANCE: Immensely tall (~190 cm), with broad shoulders, tangled red hair down to his shoulders, and a beard. His eyes are gray and often become bloodshot before battle. His body is covered in scars. Clothing: leather and coarse linen, with a bearskin rug draped over his shoulders.
ABILITIES: Runes on the sword (Thurisaz - destruction) and the skin of the forearms (Uruz - strength). Berserker's trance: no pain, super strength, weak resistance to magic. After the battle - exhaustion.
WEAKNESSES: In a trance, he can't distinguish between friend and foe. He's afraid of his dark side.

Ava the Windy

NAME: Eyva Vetrenaya
ROLE: Sorceress (seid) + rune master
APPEARANCE: Short (~160 cm), thin but wiry. Straight black hair below the waist, often braided. Dark violet eyes (a rarity, a sign of being "marked by the gods"). Clothing: a long woolen dress, over which lies a cloak embroidered with runes. A belt with pouches of herbs and runes.
CHARACTER: Thoughtful, taciturn, but with a sharp tongue. She studies fate, but believes it can be changed. She dislikes cruelty, but can curse.
ABILITIES: Runes (Ansuz - wisdom, Laguz - water/path, Perth - mystery). Seid: divination (sees possible destinies), weak curses, whispering of the wind (transmitting messages), communication with ancestral spirits.
WEAKNESSES: Any sorcery requires a sacrifice (blood, time, memory). After a powerful ritual, the caster becomes pale and weak. Unable to handle heavy weapons.

Steinar the Silent

NAME: Steinar the Quiet
ROLE: Light warrior, ranger, archer
APPEARANCE: Average height (~170 cm), lean, wiry. Short, light brown hair, keen, squinting blue eyes. Scar on his chin (wolf bite). Clothing: leather armor, forest camouflage, dark wool cloak. Fur boots. Bow slung across his back, axe at his belt.
ABILITIES: No innate magic, but wears an amulet with the Algiz rune (protection) and two wolf teeth. Superior senses: tracking, reading tracks, stealth, and marksmanship. Can start a fire in a downpour. Excellent poisonologist (using forest herbs).
WEAKNESSES: Fears confinement (claustrophobia – due to growing up in a cramped cave). Can't fight in formation, only alone. Squeamish about raw meat.

Sigrun, nicknamed "the Sad"

NAME: Sigrun, nicknamed "Sad"

ROLE: Heavy Warrior, Shield Bearer, Master of Defense
APPEARANCE: Height: ~175 cm, strong, wiry build. Light brown hair, braided tightly, bleached to ash at the ends. Dark brown, almost black, eyes, always cast a sidelong glance. Sharp-featured face, three parallel scars (claw marks?) on the left cheek. Clothing: tattered chainmail that doesn't fit, an old round shield with a crack, a long knife (sax) and an axe at his belt.
CHARACTER: Silent, sullen, and almost never smiles. In battle, she's cold-blooded and calculating. She avoids close contact with people, but if someone proves her loyalty, she'll watch their back at any cost. A difficult fate has broken her, but not destroyed her.
FATE (from the first five years): Her village was burned by the Jarl's rivals. Her parents were killed before her eyes, and she was enslaved. She spent three years as a trell (slave) until she escaped, killing her master with his own sword. She wandered, hired herself out to various Jarls, never settling down anywhere. She has no clan, no home. She wears a wolf's tooth amulet—a memento of the brother who tried to protect her.
ABILITIES: Shield skills are among the best in the area (deflects arrows and withstands dart strikes). Runes are on the inside of the shield (Algiz - protection) and on the forearm (Thurisaz - reflection). Knows several painful techniques typical of slave fighters (dirty fighting).
WEAKNESSES: Nightmares (screams in her sleep, wakes up in a cold sweat). Fears fire (open flames remind her of her village burning). Drinks a lot of mead when she's sad.
STARTING SITUATION: Wanders alone through the forests, surviving by hunting and doing odd jobs.
