The headquarters had long since fallen silent, only the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead like annoying insects. Tota Matsuda sat at the edge of the break room table, his tie loosened, fiddling with an empty coffee can. His hands were still shaking slightly.
Death of Naomi Misora.
He saw L become even quieter after this report. He saw Light Yagami—that brilliant student who had only just been officially inducted into the team yesterday—nod calmly, almost sympathetically, upon hearing the news. And it was precisely this calm, perfect reaction that haunted Matsuda.
"He's a normal guy," Matsuda thought, looking out the dark window. "Smart, polite, even a little childishly sincere. L invited him himself. It can't be..."
But Naomi Misora's face in the photograph kept appearing before my eyes. The woman who lost her fiancé and came seeking justice. And then simply took a gun and shot herself in the head in a random alley. Too clean. Too timely.
Matsuda squeezed the paper cup so hard that it crumpled pitifully.
The thought flashed through Matsuda's mind: "You've always been the weakest link on the team. The one who trusts people. The one who looks for the good in them until the very end. But now, for the first time in all his time working on the Kira case, something cold and unpleasant quietly but persistently stirred inside him.
Suspicion.
"Light..." he whispered barely audibly into the void, and his own voice seemed alien to him. "You're not Kira, are you? Pause, you're not Kira, are you?!.."
He closed his eyes and leaned back, feeling how somewhere deep inside the very faith that had previously helped him hold on was crumbling.
Now there was a new genius on the team. And Matsuda suddenly realized he no longer knew whose side he was on.
