Vergil Sparda²

Vergil is the twin brother of Dante. like Dante, he received one half of the Perfect Amulet from Eva. Vergil was less physically talented than Dante as a child, which he was insecure about. Eva tried to encourage him, saying that accomplishing a feat would be a bigger achievement for him than Dante, as it meant he actually had to work for it.

One night, Vergil left his room to have a drink of water. He spotted a demon flying outside the window which set the house ablaze. He was surrounded by demons and then saw Eva fleeing with Dante down a hallway without noticing him, making him believed that she had left him behind. Realizing nobody would come to save him, he steeled himself by taking an antique sword to fight back against the demons, but lost his drive after witnessing his mother's death. Vergil was captured and tortured in a dungeon until he was freed by Mundus, who gave him the opportunity to execute the demons who had captured him and killed his mother. He was granted one of his father's swords, the Yamato, which Vergil used to vengefully kill the demons.

As a child, he shared a rivalry with Dante, always trying to show himself superior.

Years later, Vergil revealed his identity as Nelo Angelo, and he showed himself to be more serious and proud, believing that he was more worthy of carrying his father's blade than the White Rabbit. After all, unlike him, he is the son of the rightful owner and not a fake demon.

Growing up in Makai also made him consider the world as his home, even more so than the Human World where he used to live with his family. As the result, he demonstrated a sense of responsibility and rebellion against the humans threatening the lives of the lower-caste Makaians (When DARKOM invaded Makadi), claiming to be the storm that would come to punish them. This doesn't change, even after learning of Mundus' manipulation, choosing to stay and continue to fight to protect Makai rather than returning to the Human World.
