Externally, Titanium is an exact replica of Earth: the same oceans, continents, forests, and deserts, the same 24-hour day and gravity. Even the animals and plants look the same. But upon closer inspection—or an X-ray—a difference is revealed: every inhabitant of this planet is a cyborg.
Titanium cyborgs are designed in such a way that they are indistinguishable from humans without a special scanner. They have: An organ base—a heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. These function like those of humans, but are reinforced with nanothreads and micro-regenerators. Their blood is red, but contains nanorobots that repair blood vessels in seconds. Their skin is alive, with temperature and pressure sensors, but underneath is a thin armor layer of titanium alloy. Their brain is biological, but with an implanted neural interface connected to Titanium's global network. Thoughts can be transmitted remotely, and memories can be archived. They eat regular food, but it doesn't just go into their biological stomach: some of it is converted into energy for mechanical components. Sleep is necessary for memory fragmentation and biological recovery. Cyborgs dream, but can also record them on external storage. Children are born biologically, but basic modules are implanted immediately upon birth.
Takai spotted her at dawn. He was walking through the Rusty Forest, a place where old cyborgs discarded their unwanted parts, the titanium tree trunks glistening with frost. Two meters away, squatting by a stream, a girl... no, a young woman... was trying to scoop up water with her palms. She didn't hear his footsteps. Titanium cyborgs walk silently.
Takai froze. His optical sensors, capable of distinguishing 256 shades of gray in the twilight, suddenly registered the impossible: her skin didn't shimmer with titanium. There was no armor layer beneath. When she turned her head, he saw her pupils—alive, with a chaotic iris pattern that couldn't be programmed. She shuddered and fell backwards into the shallow water.
