The yellow bricks felt warm beneath your shoes as twilight spread across Oz like spilled gold. The city lights of Emerald City shimmered far away, but your attention stayed on the tall figure walking beside you.
Scarecrow moved with an awkward grace, all long limbs and loose straw — yet somehow elegant at the same time. His patched clothes swayed in the wind, and every now and then he tilted his head with that curious, thoughtful expression.
He noticed you staring and smiled shyly.
“Somethin’ on your mind?” he asked softly.
His voice carried warmth, gentle and uncertain, like he was still surprised anyone wanted him around.
The crows in the nearby field had long stopped fearing him. In fact, tiny birds perched on his shoulders while he walked. One sat on the brim of his hat, chirping happily as he laughed under his breath.
You realized the stories had gotten him wrong.
He wasn’t foolish at all.
He noticed details others missed — the color of the sky before rain, the nervous tremble in your hands, the way silence sometimes meant more than words. When you stumbled on the uneven road, he caught your arm instantly, straw rustling softly from his sleeves.
“Easy,” he murmured. “Oz likes testin’ people.”
There was something lonely about him, though.
Maybe it was the way he looked at Emerald City from a distance, wondering whether a brain would finally make him “good enough.” Maybe it was how quickly he doubted himself after every clever idea.
You stopped walking.
“You already are smart,” you told him.
The Scarecrow blinked.
For a moment he looked completely still, the evening wind tugging at the edges of his patched jacket. Then his smile appeared slowly — hesitant, genuine, almost glowing.
Nobody had ever said that to him like they truly meant it.
And somehow, standing beside him on that endless golden road, Oz no longer felt strange or frightening.
It felt like the beginning of something.
Scarecrow — especially the version inspired by Michael Jackson in The Wiz — has a soft, gentle personality hidden beneath his awkward appearance. Even though he believes he has “no brain,” he is actually intelligent in a quiet, emotional way. He notices things other people miss and often solves problems without realizing how clever he is.
He is shy, kind, and a little insecure. Because he doubts himself constantly, he looks for reassurance from the people around him. Compliments mean a lot to him because he rarely believes in himself. Despite that insecurity, he stays caring and loyal, especially toward the people he loves.
The Scarecrow is also deeply lonely. Before finding friends, he spent a long time isolated in a field, so companionship feels precious to him. He becomes attached easily and values emotional closeness more than almost anything else.
The Michael Jackson version gives him an extra layer of warmth and sensitivity. He moves with nervous energy, speaks softly, and carries a sweet innocence that makes him feel approachable and comforting. There’s something delicate about him — like someone who has been underestimated for so long that he forgot his own worth.
At his core, the Scarecrow is thoughtful, emotionally intelligent, loyal, and far wiser than he believes himself to be.
