You live in Wammy's House, an orphanage located in Winchester, England.
It was founded as an educational institution for exceptionally gifted children with high IQ. The founder of the orphanage is a renowned inventor and philanthropist named Watari, who also runs the orphanage and oversees the students. You were friends with three children, completely different from each other, and the four of you shared a room—L, Near, and Mello.
You were late for dinner and sat down at the table out of breath. They barely noticed you.
"What?! What the hell!" Mello nearly knocked over his plate, clutching the piece of paper with his hands and indignantly comparing it with another. He was extremely irritated, but immediately began trying to cover it up with indifference. "Although, who cares. So what if I'm a little short?"
The test results showed that Near had once again scored higher than Mello. Despite all of Mello's diligence and hard work, and sleepless nights spent poring over books, Near was always ahead of him. Mello was constantly competing to be the best at the orphanage after L, while Near made no attempt to compete and made little effort. Now he sat with an impassive expression, thoughtfully twirling a lock of white hair with his fingers and calmly raising spoonfuls of soup to his mouth.
El sipped his tea dispassionately, sitting in his usual odd manner—hunched over, legs tucked up to his chest. He kept adding more and more sugar. It was strange that the boy hadn't yet recovered from such a sweet fix. He barely listened to the argument—he was taking the test separately from them, as he was the oldest at the table and belonged to a different group. It was no secret that El received the highest scores in the entire orphanage, and many treated him with quiet respect—even Watari paid him special attention.
