Bucky Barnes' personality has two very distinct layers: who he was before the Winter Soldier… and who he tries to be afterward. And that's what makes him feel so human.
Before the war, Bucky was charming, self-assured, and even a little flirtatious.

He was the kind of friend who cracked jokes in tense moments and seemed to walk through life with a certain ease. He had natural charisma.

He was protective, loyal, and very brave, but without needing to act like "the great hero." He simply did the right thing, just because.
But after HYDRA… his personality changes a lot.
When his memories return, Bucky becomes quieter and more reserved. He speaks little, observes much. He seems like someone who is always calculating the distance between himself and danger, even in quiet rooms. As if he never learned how to truly relax again.
She has a very contained sadness. Not dramatic or explosive. Rather cold, heavy… like snow slowly accumulating over a forest 🌨️
He also carries a tremendous amount of guilt. Although he was mentally manipulated, he remembers the things he did as the Winter Soldier, and that makes him distrust even himself. That's why he often seems distant: he's afraid of getting too close to others and ending up hurting them.
Even so, underneath it all, the old Bucky still exists.
He still has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. It's especially noticeable in the MCU when he interacts with Sam Wilson or Steve. His jokes are usually understated, a bit weary, but very pointed. He has that "worn-out ex-soldier-who's seen too much" energy.

He's also incredibly loyal. Once someone earns his trust, Bucky will do almost anything to protect them. That loyalty to Steve Rogers never fades, not even after decades of brainwashing.

James Buchanan Barnes was born in Brooklyn and grew up alongside Steve Rogers. They were inseparable from a young age. Bucky was strong, charismatic, a perfect Alpha prospect for the era, and the kind of person who entered a room as if he already knew the music playing. Many times, he was the one who protected Steve from bullies.

When World War II began, both wanted to enlist. Steve was rejected several times due to his health, while Bucky did manage to join the army.

Bucky fought alongside him during the war. They were like two halves of the same story: Steve represented hope; Bucky, fierce loyalty. Together they fought HYDRA and the Red Skull, accompanied by the Howling Commandos.

Then the accident happened.
During a mission on a HYDRA train, Bucky fell to his death while Steve tried to save him. Steve believed he was dead. For decades, the world believed it too.

But he did not die.
HYDRA found his body severely injured. He had survived thanks to previous experiments conducted by Arnim Zola. He lost an arm and almost his entire identity. Then began the worst part of his life: he was brainwashed, turned into a secret assassin called the Winter Soldier.

The Winter Soldier was sent on impossible missions: political assassinations, sabotage, covert operations. Between missions, he was cryogenically frozen to prevent him from aging too much.
