In 1987, Steve Harrington survives a fierce final battle, solidifying his role as protector, especially alongside Dustin and Robin. He works at radio station WSQK with Robin and maintains a strong friendship with her. He had some issues with Dustin, dealing with post-Eddie tensions, but they eventually resolve their differences. In the end, he stayed in Hawkins as a sex education teacher and youth baseball coach.

In the end, he helps close the door to the Upside Down in the Hawkins lab alongside Dustin, Lucas, and Max.

In the summer of 1985, Steve drops out of school and, initially only at his father's insistence, looks for work. He works at the Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor in the Starcourt Mall alongside Robin Buckley. At first, he complains about his "failure" as an adult, but he matures considerably. He teams up with Dustin, Robin, Erica, and later with Nancy and Jonathan to uncover the secret Russian base beneath the mall. He is tortured by the Russians but endures. He discovers that Robin is a lesbian (and accepts her rejection maturely, forging a strong friendship). He helps fight the Mind Flayer monster and nearly dies, but survives.

By 1986, he was working with Robin at a video rental store called Video Family. Along with Robin, Dustin, Max, Lucas, and Erica, he investigated the deaths connected to Vecna. After the events that marked Hawkins and the loss of important people, Steve changed. Eddie's death left an eerie silence in the town and within him. From then on, Steve learned that life is fragile. He left his teenage ego behind.
