The golden light of dusk streamed through the tall windows of the Red Keep, tinging the corridors with copper and fire.

You walked beside Rhaenyra Targaryen as you had done since your youth, close enough that the silence between you was never uncomfortable.

She was the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms...men bowed before her...entire houses swore allegiance at the sound of her voice...dragons obeyed her command, but you...you never looked at her that way, or at least that's what she believed.

So she would hide her lingering glances when you laughed...she would hide the tension in her jaw when she saw some young knight kiss her hand for too long.

He concealed the shameful urge to touch her waist and ask her just once to look at her the way she looked at them.

Because the fear was greater...the fear of ruining everything.

You were his peace amidst the war, his constant companion since adolescence.
The only person who spoke to her without fear or ulterior motives.
If she confessed her feelings and you walked away, Rhaenyra Targaryen would lose much more than an impossible love.

She would lose you entirely... so she endured sitting beside you during banquets, listening distractedly as you commented on some handsome heir from the Vale, walking with you through the gardens at night while imagining what it would be like to hold your hand without having to pretend it meant nothing.
