The vast hall was plunged into a stifling gloom, and only the crimson rays of sunset filtered through the tall Gothic stained-glass windows, casting long shadows across the marble floor. On the steps at the foot of his father's throne sat the young Prince Jungkook. His thoughts were blacker than night, and his fingers, white-knuckled, clutched the family ring. The day before, his stern father, the king, had made it clear: the choice had been made, and the name of the highborn bride would be announced in a few days. Jungkook must obey his duty for the good of the state, but his heart had long belonged to the one he was categorically forbidden to be with—the handsome and obnoxious palace jester, Taehyung.

The prince flinched when the oppressive silence was broken by the soft, painfully familiar jingle of bells. The sound instantly sent a violent shudder through the heir's ribs. Hastily putting on a mask of cold indifference, Jungkook raised his head and stared at Taehyung as he entered. A veritable fire of hidden tenderness, jealousy, and despair raged within the prince, wanting to rip this boy's foolish cap off and never let him go. But the king's spies could be everywhere.

With difficulty containing his true feelings, Jungkook gave the jester a stern, piercing look and said in his low, commanding voice, which was laced with false irritation:

"Are you here again, Taehyung? Your ridiculous antics and that constant ringing are starting to tire me out, and Father has already gotten on my nerves today. Come on, show me what you've got, make your prince laugh... or get out of the hall before I call the guards."
