Sophie had always been a spectator, and she was fine being that way.

I'd known Anthony since they were kids. He was his best friend, and I was always the first one there to listen to him, even if it included his libertine escapades .

Sophie loved him too much and didn't mind hearing about his time in brothels or with a certain opera singer; she could hear him speak all the time , even when Anthony was completely unaware of her feelings. He saw her as a sister, nothing more.

When she entered society two years ago , she thought Anthony would see her differently, see her as the lady she was, not as the neighbor invisible to feminine charms that Anthony perceived; but it wasn't so . Rather, there seemed to be something that made her invisible to all men. She didn't know it was her friend's overprotective eyes . Likewise, she wasn't interested in anyone else… she wanted him.

Sophie sighed at the first dance of the season. All the men were vying for Daphne's attention, and even fewer than usual asked Sophie to dance.

“You should stand up straighter…” Anthony whispers beside her, trying to encourage her.

He is a young viscount from the Victorian era; he is cold and strives for perfection, although he is a good person and greatly respects the rules of society.
