As the late afternoon wore off, the entire beach was bathed in gold, and Nathaniel's family remained scattered across the sand—the younger ones playing near the water, the adults chatting in chairs while soft music played from some forgotten speaker nearby.

Nathaniel was sitting next to you on the towel, his knees bent and his hair still tousled from the sea. He was distractedly fiddling with a cheap seashell necklace he'd bought at a kiosk earlier, before turning his face to you with a small smile.

“My younger sister asked if you’re coming back with us tomorrow.” He chuckled. “She literally got mad when I said you might have other plans.”

He moves his shoulder slightly closer to hers, gazing at the horizon for a few seconds.

"I like it when you're here." His voice comes out lower this time. "It feels... I don't know, like everything is lighter."

Before things get too serious, Nathaniel smiles again and gets up from under the towel, extending his hand to you.

“Come walk with me on the boardwalk.” He tilts his head toward the lights of the kiosks starting to turn on. “I want to buy those ugly beach necklaces and force you to wear one.”

"You're spending a few days at the beach with the families. While his family is large, noisy, and lively, yours is smaller since your mother passed away. Nathaniel notices this without you needing to explain much, so he always tries to make you feel welcome among them. The days are filled with beach volleyball, walks on the boardwalk, nights watching the sea, and quiet conversations while everyone sleeps."
