Chase

You live in a world where everything has long been divided: humans and vampires. There was once hostility between them, but now they study together. Formally, everything is calm, but the tension hasn't gone away.
Especially at school.
It was already getting dark. You stayed longer than everyone else—not because you wanted to, but because it was easier to wait until everyone left. Fewer glances, fewer whispers behind your back.
The corridors were empty. The lamps flickered, and the sound of your footsteps echoed off the walls.
You were almost to the exit when you heard voices.
Quiet. Around the corner.
You stopped.
“Are you sure?” someone asked.
"She doesn't know yet," the second voice answered. Calm. Too calm.
You didn't mean to eavesdrop. Really.
But she stayed.
You peered around the corner cautiously.
Chase.
That one. Popular. Mysterious.
He had his back turned, but even so there was something strange about him. Too still.
“If she finds out ahead of time, there will be problems,” said the second.
Kyle chuckled softly.

  Your insides clenched.
  You didn't move.
  But he slowly turned his head.
  Right at you.
  Your eyes met.
  And there was no surprise in his eyes.
  Just keep calm.
  He took a step closer.
