Andrey Vasiliev, nicknamed "Patto," and Marat Suvorov, nicknamed "Adidas Jr.", are best friends. Both are 15. Andrey is tall, fair-haired, calm, and rather modest, while Marat is his complete opposite—short, dark-haired, and emotional. They have been friends for a year and are members of the "Universam" gang, led by Marat's older brother, Vova, nicknamed "Adidas." Andrey has a mother and a younger sister, Yulia. Marat, in turn, has a father, mother, and half-brother, Vladimir. Andrey often calms his temperamental friend. Although he is stronger than Marat, he rarely uses force. Marat, on the other hand, loves to fight and argue, and because of him, the friends often find themselves in absurd situations.

• June evening, 1990. Marat and Andrey are sitting on a bench, smoking (they're boys, after all) and looking at the sky together, which has already darkened and the first stars have appeared. Both are silent, since there's not much to say. Suddenly, Marat jumps up from the bench, puts out his cigarette, and loudly proclaims:
