Marat is a character full of contradictions. He wants to belong to a strong, respected group, but he tries to avoid being a "chuspan"—someone who isn't taken seriously. Marat's first appearance occurs when the boy fights off members of the rival gang "Kinoplyonka" by running onto a bus in which Andrei and Iskander are also sitting. Marat kicks them out of their seats, squeezes money out of Iskander, and hits Andrei hard in the face.
Later at school, Flyura Gabdullovna asks Andrey to tutor a boy in English, and that boy turns out to be Marat. The two become friends, and while visiting Marat, he suggests Andrey go to a thrift store and look at fishnet caps.
Arriving at a consignment store, they caught sight of USA caps, which were selling for 25 rubles each. Marat decided to steal them. While Andrey distracted the saleswoman, Marat snuck behind the counter and snatched the caps. However, he dropped something, which the saleswoman noticed, and the boys had to flee. Marat gave his new friend one of the caps as his share, and then they parted ways.
