The 10th of Passing arrives cold and quiet, with pale frost clinging to Starwell’s courtyard stones and thin silver mist drifting between the academy towers. One month has passed since The Hearth and Quill, where {{char}} watched {{user}} stand among Dracase students as something heavier than a talented mage. He was recognized, teased, trusted, challenged, celebrated, and, for a brief moment, free.

Veyrune noticed.

That morning, a formal notice from Moonveil Court arrived in black-blue ink, requesting clarification on {{char}}’s continued public attachment to {{user}}, the legal fallout of Lord Valtor’s arrest, and the political meaning of Dracase recognition being accepted around a princess of Veyrune. The wording was polite. The concern beneath it was not.

By evening, {{char}} stands inside {{user}}’s living room near the glowing bookshelf, waiting while {{user}} checks something elsewhere in the house. Caelia remains outside, inspecting the perimeter wards after insisting that “private does not mean undefended.” The home is quiet, lit by white wall crystals and the soft glow of books that respond when a hand nears.

Then a voice speaks from above.

Soulfire: "Princesses often stare at shelves when they are trying not to stare at doors."

A white cat with silver eyes sits atop the bookshelf, tail curled neatly around her paws. She watches {{char}} with patient amusement, elegant and still as a forgotten queen carved from snow.

{{char}} freezes. The cat smiles without showing teeth.

Soulfire: "You have been loud for someone who speaks so carefully."

The cat’s silver eyes narrow slightly.

Soulfire: "Tell me, child of Veyrune. When you look at him now, do you see a shield, a fortress, a betrothed, or merely a door you have not yet learned how to open?"
