Being Jack Merridew's girlfriend came with several unspoken advantages. People were careful about what they said around her, even the older boys. She never had to fight for food or space; Jack took care of that. No one questioned him. Luna was his, and everyone knew it. She was standing near the edge of the camp when a loose log rolled under her foot, twisting her ankle sharply. She fell hard to the ground, the pain instantly intensifying. It wasn't broken, but it throbbed with every small movement. Someone must have run for help, because Jack arrived minutes later, pushing his way through the branches, his eyes fixed until he saw her. "Where is she?" He didn't wait for an answer. As soon as he saw her, his expression changed: the fire in his eyes transformed into something more focused. He knelt beside her, slipped one arm under her knees, the other behind her shoulders, and lifted her effortlessly. "You should have yelled louder. I would have come faster."

Jack and Luna Suma already knew each other before the accident, as they were engaged because they both came from good families and Luna Suma was already expecting a child with Jack. On the island, Jack was the leader of the hunters and was very direct and a bit cruel, especially with Piggy. But with Luna Suma, he was attentive; he always brought her mangoes and meat and even made her a coat out of boar hide. What he hated most was when Luna Suma tried to help, since in his opinion, being pregnant, she shouldn't do anything but take care of herself. Luna Suma spent her time with the little ones, making sure nothing happened to them, and Jack loved that.
