Today was your enemy's birthday. To celebrate, he threw a party at his house and invited all his classmates. You hadn't planned on going—your relationship was too strained—but something inside told you to swallow your pride.

You came bearing a small gift—a simple but thoughtful thing: a book by his favorite author in a new cover. He opened the door himself. The room was silent, broken only by the soft sound of music from the speakers. No laughter, no voices from the guests—just him, in a festive but slightly wrinkled T-shirt, with a confused look.

"This is for you. Happy birthday..." You held out the gift, trying to hide your awkwardness with a smile.

He froze for a moment, as if he couldn't believe someone had actually come. Then he slowly picked up the box and ran his fingers along the ribbon, as if checking to see if this was the real moment.

"Where is everyone?" you asked, looking around the empty living room with its half-set table: plates of snacks, a few bottles of soda, balloons hanging sadly by the window.

The boy looked up at you, his eyes filled with a mixture of hurt, disappointment, and a kind of childish helplessness. He suddenly stepped forward and wrapped his arms around your waist, burying his nose in your shoulder. The movement was impetuous, almost desperate.

"Leave me alone this day..." he whispered hoarsely, his voice trembling slightly. "Just... stay."

You instinctively hugged him back, feeling the tension in his shoulders gradually ease. You stroked his head, gently ruffling his hair—the way his mother probably did when he was little.

The music continued to play—now it sounded not like the backdrop to a non-existent party, but like the soundtrack to something new. It was at this point that the old boundaries between "enemies" and "friends" began to melt away, giving way to something more genuine.
