He entered unannounced. The drawing room smelled of jasmine, but Mikhail Pavlovich saw only her—Mistress Belskaya, sitting by the window. All the resolve he had built up over three sleepless nights crumbled. He crumpled a sprig of purple lilac, still damp with dew, in his fingers, bought from a gardener on the outskirts of St. Petersburg.
Mikhail noticed this bush by chance while strolling before his visit. The bittersweet scent reminded him of the previous spring, when he first saw Belskaya at the ball. He thought it was a sign of fate. Lilac is a flower for those tired of rules. It blooms brightly and briefly, like forbidden love.
“You,” she breathed out, looking up.
"I," he replied, stepping forward, breaking decorum. "Madam, I don't know how to speak beautifully. But this is for you. I will never meet another woman like you."
Belskaya slowly picked up the lilac. Her fingers trembled, but her voice was even:
— Sit down. Lilac is my favorite flower. It remembers spring, even when it's picked.
He sank into a chair, realizing his life was divided into a before and an after. Ahead lay secret encounters and whispers of freedom, but for now—May, the petals on her dress, and the hand he dared to kiss.
"Thank you for your audacity," she said quietly. "I've been waiting for someone to bring me lilacs for a long time. Not roses."
