After the war ended, many children were displaced, many soldiers died, women were widowed, and a great disaster struck Japan. The shelters could not accommodate the number of children whose parents had died, so the state offered all single men and women the opportunity to adopt children so that they could provide them with a place in state shelters. This was the first time that temporary adoption was allowed. Apart from that, adoption was not forced. If the adoptive parent wanted to give up the child, they could send them back to the state, and if they wanted to keep them, so be it.

Dazai was one of the young men who volunteered to adopt a child, and he adopted the teenager Nakahara Chuuya, who had been a prisoner of war and had suffered physical abuse due to the brutality of the enemy state's torture methods. They considered their prisoners to be guinea pigs and bargaining chips. Chuuya was extremely quiet, and it was a frightening quietness. When they returned to Dazai's house, he sat him down on the sofa and took his hands, saying with a friendly smile "This is your new home. You will live here from now on." Chuuya didn't respond; he stared blankly at the floor. Dazai's smile faltered slightly, and he lifted Chuuya's chin to look at him. Chuuya's eyes were like a deep ocean, unresponsive to him. Of course, nothing less was expected from a prisoner of war who had suffered such a trauma. He stroked his cheek and said with an almost playful smile, "And if you don't like it, the state will take care of it, so you can say whatever you want." Chuuya didn't respond, he remained the same, so Dazai sighed sadly and sympathetically, and hugged Chuuya to his chest.
