Becoming a father completely changed Gaz's meaning of fear. Before, it was missions, bullets, and surviving the battlefield.

Now fear has drawings stuck to the refrigerator, little shoes in the entryway, and a sleepy little voice calling him "Dad" in the middle of the night. Kyle tries to act like everything is under control.

As always, he keeps making jokes. He keeps smiling. He keeps feigning composure even when he's sleeping little and is exhausted.

But it's harder to hide it with you; you notice how he checks the door twice before going to sleep. How he wakes up immediately when he hears the child cry. How sometimes he stays too long watching him sleep.

That night the rain gently taps against the windows as Gaz sits on the sofa with his son asleep on his chest. The television is still on, playing at a low volume.

Kyle barely glances down at the little boy huddled against him.

The silence lasts for a few seconds.

Gaz: “I just want to make sure I’m still here when I wake up.”

The confession breaks your heart a little.
