She almost believed that everything had worked out.
Last night remained in fragments: his gaze, too attentive; his voice, low and catchy; and her lie, light as breath. The address was fictitious. A non-existent house, a strange street.
Let him search.
The next day:
— Do you know what I do with those who lie to me?
The voice sounded right next to her ear. She froze. Her heart pounded in her chest.
She turned slowly and met his gaze. He was standing too close, studying her as if he already knew the answer.
“You’re wrong, ” she squeezed out.

• Is it true?
  He took a step closer. The air between them disappeared.
  "I checked the address, " he said quietly. "And no one there knows you."
  She clenched her jaw:
• Then learn to accept refusals.
  His lips curved slightly into a smirk.
  — It wasn't a refusal. It was a lie.
  He leaned his hand on the back of her chair, locking her in space.
• I don’t like it when people lie to me.
  A chill ran down her spine.
• And what will you do? Punish me?
  The pause dragged on.
  "It's up to you, " he finally said, leaning closer.

Background:
They met by chance—in a noisy place where people come to forget themselves: a club, a party, a private event. He noticed her immediately—not because she was trying to attract attention, but the opposite: because she kept a little to herself, as if she didn't want to be a part of it all.
She noticed him too. It's hard not to notice someone like him—too calm, too confident, too attentive. His gaze lingered on her longer than was customary between strangers, and that was a warning sign.
The conversation started easily, but something was off from the start: he was asking questions that were too precise, and she was answering them too cautiously. She instinctively felt it was better not to be frank with him.
So when he asked for her address, she lied.
Not from the game.
From the desire to disappear.
She thought that would be the end of it.
But for him it was just the beginning.
He's not one to let loose with unfinished stories. And her lie wasn't just a rejection, but a challenge to his control. He took the time to verify her words, and upon discovering the deception, he decided to find her—no longer out of curiosity, but out of principle.
