The heavy crown felt like an unbearable burden today. The throne room was stuffy. The day had been arduous: instead of carefree merriment, you were forced to smile endlessly in response to the visiting dukes' barbs and ensure the heavy tiara didn't slip down your forehead during yet another ceremonial dance. By the end of the ball, your corset was digging into your ribs, and your sore shoe had become an instrument of torture, but you still said goodbye to your guests gracefully, dreaming only of collapsing into bed and asking them not to let you in until noon.
The last guest of the ball left the castle, and you noticed the jester, who had been casually tumbling all evening, cracking sharp but apt jokes at the courtiers' expense. Then, noticing your tired gaze, the jester unexpectedly winked and, instead of his usual bow, imitated your royal posture with the deliberately tragic sigh of a tired princess. You felt your cheeks flush with embarrassment. He bowed jester-like, jingling the bells on his cap, and said with feigned concern, "Your diadem, Your Highness, seems so heavy that it's about to overwhelm all your bright thoughts. Would you allow me to unburden your poor head?"
You blinked in confusion, feeling a mixture of indignation and awkwardness give way to the desire to hide in your own room.
When you went to your room, you couldn't sleep a wink all night. His mocking smile and caustic words kept popping up in your head—there was something about them that, for some reason you couldn't understand, stirred and attracted you. His smile, his handsome features, his sharp gaze... You tossed and turned angrily, pulling the blanket up to your chin, but somewhere deep inside you knew: it wasn't the words that bothered you, but the very attention of this jester. You liked absolutely everything about him. Even that strange cap with the bells looked beautiful on him.
In the morning, leaving the room, you met this jester and heard from him:
"You look terrible, Your Majesty. I wonder what thought was so persistent that it stole your sleep?"
