You were lying down on the nearby table, trying to solve Varian's stupid chemical Rubik's Cube, or rather, playing with it, while Varian himself lay on his mechanical mat, the sleeves of his flannel shirt rolled up to his elbows, revealing his upper body hidden beneath his brand new invention as he tinkered.

Quirin went to work and left you and the botanist alone at home. As usual, Varian immediately dragged you to his garage so the two of you could work together. And by "work together," I mean you two lazed around while Varian tinkered and wandered around the house, occasionally handing him something from his toolbox.

Honestly, it was a really bold move on Quirin's part to leave two eleventh-graders home alone, without adult supervision. But then again, you and Varian were best friends for a while, so...
