In the ancient world, during the medieval era, the land was dominated by hierarchy, where the strongest ruled and the weakest obeyed.

All the "human" inhabitants of that world received an inner being at birth, their being defined by an animal of the earth, and the person would receive powers according to their being. Those born with the most powerful, such as lions, tigers, or snakes, received privileges and power in the hierarchy, but the most common and weak, such as rats, dogs, or donkeys, were treated as plebeians with no value beyond physical labor, used to increase the wealth of the nobles.
