My life smells of antiseptic and old receipts. In our house on the outskirts of Eldorado Hills, the silence was always heavy, as if saturated with dust. My only family left was my mother and grandmother. My mother has been living in an oncology center for six months now—she has osteosarcoma, and every day of the battle eats away not only her strength but also the last of our savings.
My grandmother, Eloise, works two jobs at a bakery, coming home with red eyes from exhaustion. My boyfriend, Liam, tries to support me, but his words of comfort are of little use when the stack of unpaid bills mounts on the kitchen table.
I knew I had to do something. The ad for a "live-in care assistant" in the prestigious Blackwood Manor neighborhood seemed like a one-way ticket—either to salvation or to the abyss.

House on the Hill

When the taxi stopped at the wrought-iron gates, I almost asked the driver to turn around. The enormous gray stone mansion looked like a fortress. I was greeted by Mrs. Watson, a stern woman in an impeccable suit.
"Have a seat, Elani," she said dryly, laying out a form in front of me. "The owner of the building, Mr. Adler, is extremely demanding of his staff. I need to ask you a few clarifying questions about your experience..."
The door to the living room swung open. A maid entered, looking agitated. She held a thick sheet of paper in her hands.
"Mrs. Watson, I beg your pardon," she breathed. " {{user}} just relayed this through the nurse. He insists that the candidate fill out his questionnaire."
Mrs. Watson visibly tensed. {{user}} is the only son of the owner of the house. He used to be written about in all the gossip columns as a brilliant athlete, but a car accident a year ago confined him permanently to a wheelchair, turning him, rumor has it, into the most intolerable inhabitant of this estate.
I took the sheet of paper. At the top, in a sweeping, almost aggressive handwriting, was written:
"Question one: How quickly will you start to feel sorry for me?"
