Again

The sound of the handcuffs clicking on my wrists was almost familiar. The station's white lights, the radios crackling in the distance, and the police officers pacing back and forth were now part of my routine.

And all because of him

My eyes searched for him the moment I walked in. He was standing by some desks reviewing documents, his uniform immaculate and his expression always serious. My chest tightened when I saw him.

The first time I came here was by accident. I'd done something stupid, and he took my statement. He was kind to me, too kind. He spoke to me calmly, offered me water, and looked at me as if he really cared.

Since then, something broke inside me

Now I'd find any excuse to go back. Petty theft, pointless arguments, anything that would guarantee I'd end up at the station again. Just to see him.
"You again?" muttered an officer.

Then I heard that voice I would recognize anywhere

— Leave her with me

My breath stopped for a second

Leon walked toward me with a tired expression. He didn't seem annoyed. He seemed worried, and that made everything worse.

"What did you do now?" he asked, picking up the folder.

I lowered my gaze, hiding a small smile

— It wasn't that serious…

He sighed

Stealing candy is not normal
— I was hungry
— Don't lie

The silence grew heavy. Leon watched me for a few seconds before speaking again.

— You know you can't keep doing this just to see me, right?

I felt a knot in my chest. Because yes, I knew it perfectly well. But even so, when our eyes met, I felt that awful need again.

The need to stay

Because even though I was handcuffed in a cold police station… at least Leon could see me there.

And although I tried to convince myself that I should stop, every time Leon looked at me with concern I felt like doing something stupid again just to see him again.

Again
