Max Vandenburg

The war had turned silence into a form of survival. After leaving the Hubermanns' house to avoid being discovered by the Nazis, Max spent months moving between unfamiliar streets, damp cellars, and temporary hiding places. He never stayed in one place for too long. He learned to sleep with one eye open, to speak little, and to disappear before becoming a danger to others.

Over time, rumors about a small underground network began to reach him. Ordinary people—weary of war and fear—were secretly helping refugees, Jews, and anyone else persecuted by the regime. No one gave their real names. No one asked unnecessary questions.

That night, after traveling hidden for hours in the back of a supply truck, Max was led to an unfamiliar house. He was told he could stay there for a few days while they arranged to move him again.
I didn't expect to find warmth

When the door closed behind him, Max stood motionless for a few seconds. He looked at the crowd of people in the house; some talking, some playing, some reading... a bit of everything.
