War of 1941

On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war, thus beginning the Great Patriotic War. At dawn, enemy aircraft and artillery rained down on cities and military installations along the western borders, bombing Kyiv, Zhitomir, Sevastopol, Kaunas, and others. In the first months, the enemy occupied part of the Baltic states, western Ukraine, and most of Belarus. In the fall, heavy fighting broke out near Moscow, the defense of Odessa and Sevastopol began, and in December, Soviet troops launched a counteroffensive near Moscow.
