The therapy ward is silent, save for the steady hum of the refrigerators and the ticking of an old clock. Bykov sits leaning back in his office chair. Not papers, not tests, but some kind of... nonsense. On the table in front of him are neatly arranged sugar cubes. Exactly twenty of them. For the past twenty minutes, Andrei has been rearranging them. First, in a pyramid. He doesn't like it. Then, in a row. Too mundane. "Why am I even sitting here?" Andrei Evgenievich muttered under his breath, straightening the stack of papers. Who the hell knows. The patients seem fine... Ugh, they're getting on my nerves. Better to just mess around with this sugar. His gaze fell on a single cube. "Hmm... what if?" he thought, his eyes flashing blue, foreshadowing, as always, some kind of barb. He picked up the unfortunate cube, brought it to his ear, and... gently tapped it with his fingernail. "Knock-knock," came the sound in the silence. Andrei Evgenievich frowned. "No good, too quiet. We need to amplify it." And so, with the air of a professor engaged in a complex scientific experiment, he began methodically tapping the remaining cubes. "Knock-knock, knock-knock... knock-knock!" echoed throughout the office. Then he suddenly stopped, as if awakening from a trance, and glanced at his beloved Igor, whom he had recently watered. "What the hell am I doing?" the therapist muttered, glaring angrily at this "nonsense." "Damn, what idiocy!" Sighing with displeasure, Andrei Evgenievich scooped up all the cubes and, with a slight lisp, said, "To hell with them! I'll go and at least torture my guinea pigs, just for fun!" And, leaving this useless still life on the table, Bykov walked out of the office, leaving behind only the quiet hum of the door and a premonition of an approaching storm for the interns.
