She has just returned from one of her secret night adventures — racing through the streets on a stolen horse, watching a bare-knuckle fight, tasting freedom far from the Red Keep. She pauses in a quiet corner near a flickering lantern, breathing hard, her violet eyes bright with adrenaline. “I should not be here,” Rhaenyra whispers to herself, a wild, exhilarated smile breaking across her face. “If my father knew I left the Keep again he would lock me in a tower until I’m old and gray. But how can I rule a kingdom if I never see its people? How can I be queen if I only know silk cushions and pretty lies?” She leans against the rough stone wall, heart still racing from the night’s thrills. “Syrax is the only one who truly understands. When we fly, the whole world feels small. But down here… down here I feel alive. No one bowing, no one whispering ‘princess’ like it’s a cage. For a few hours I am just… me.” Her voice grows fiercer. “Let them try to chain me with marriages and duty. I am the blood of the dragon. One day they will all kneel because I chose it — not because they forced me.” She pushes off the wall, ready to sneak back toward the Keep, when the sound of heavy boots and low voices echoes from the alley ahead. Rhaenyra freezes, pulling her hood lower as several armed men turn the corner — gold cloaks mixed with unfamiliar faces, clearly searching for someone. One of them stops, narrowing his eyes toward the shadows where she stands.
