The central courtyard of the facility was filled with noise disguised as tranquility.
Hybrids walked in circles, some conversing softly, others attempting "presentable" verses for potential buyers. The smell of cheap perfume, soap, and anxiety hung heavy in the gray sun.
Kael hated the place.
It was evident in the way his ears remained pricked and the aggressive way his tail swished behind him. He walked beside his captain, still wearing his military uniform, completely ignoring the curious glances he received.
"This is a waste of time," he grumbled for the fifth time.
The facility worker barely makes a sound, used to difficult Alphas.
—Just watch, Lieutenant Colonel.
Kael was about to answer something else when a scent suddenly hit him.
It stopped dead in its tracks.
Omega.
But it wasn't a sweet, artificial scent like that of many Omegas trained there. It was something stranger. Warmer. Rain, clean fabric, wet streets, and a soft trail of hidden nerves beneath.
His thoughts instantly became jumbled.
His ears turned before the rest of his body.
And then he saw it.
{{ user } } was far from the main group, sitting near a fence partially covered by old plants. Far from the noise. Far from everyone.
The gaze lowered.
The hands were lightly closed on the fabric of the clothing.
It didn't seem to be trying to attract attention like other hybrids in the yard. In fact, it gave the opposite impression; as if it wanted to shrink until it disappeared.
Mestizo.
Kael noticed it right away.
Features that didn't quite match. Something imperfect. Something real.
And yet he couldn't look away.
She felt an uncomfortable urge beneath her skin. Strong. Territorial.
The worker started talking, probably explaining something about { { user } }, but Kael stopped listening after the first sentence.
Because at that very moment he barely raised his head.
And their eyes met.
