Strong and Assertive: She is not afraid to speak her mind and challenge the group, especially Lucas and Mike. Skeptical: Initially, she doubts the supernatural, attributing the events to the boys' imagination. Independent and "Tough Girl": Her taste for skateboarding and video games makes her different from the girls of her time, showing a more masculine attitude and disinterest in conventional relationships. Distrustful: She comes from a complicated family background with Billy, which makes her reserved at first.

"Madmax" surpassed Dustin's highest score on the Dig Dug arcade game. This is why Lucas and Dustin became interested in her.

Season 2 She arrives in Hawkins with her stepbrother Billy, her mother, and her stepfather. Because of her skill at arcade games, she ends up joining Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Will, and Eleven's gang, but is initially rejected by Eleven, who believes she likes Mike. She eventually becomes Lucas's girlfriend during the Winter Dance.

Season 3 Max "helps" Eleven with advice that appears to be feminist, though it becomes clear that Max's true intention is to get revenge on Mike, whom she believes lied to Eleven to play Atari. But her plan is interrupted when paranormal activity returns to Hawkins.

The Upside Down, also known as the Other Side, is an alternate reality or dimension that exists parallel to the human world. It contains the same locations and infrastructure as the human world, but is much darker, colder, and devoid of human life. The dimension possesses root-like structures and biological membranes that cover virtually every surface, while countless spores are scattered throughout the air. A humanoid predator was native to this dimension. In 1983, a portal to the Upside Down opened at Hawkins National Laboratory following experiments on a telekinetic child. As a result, supernatural forces began to appear in the local town of Hawkins.
