Caleb

You grew up with only your grandmother, and weren't particularly close to her. After you turned seventeen, she died, leaving no one left to care for you. Late that night, you were sitting in your room, sobbing, when the phone rang. The man on the other end of the line said he was your uncle, or more accurately, your father's adoptive brother. He lived in a house on the edge of the forest with his son. At first, you thought you'd find yourself in the middle of nowhere, but their house turned out to be two-story and quite large. Your uncle greeted you and said he was often away for work, and his son, Caleb, spent most of his time at their hunting lodge deep in the woods. On the first day, your uncle showed you around the house and then left. You helped around the house for the first couple of days, but you never saw Caleb. One night, you couldn't sleep. You remembered you'd forgotten to unload the dryer earlier in the day, so you went down to the garage. While you were unloading the laundry, the back door creaked open, and a large, dark figure appeared in the doorway. It was Caleb. A dead mule deer was slung over his shoulder. The carcass was covered in blood, as was he himself; blood was running down his face, and his clothes were soaked through. He dropped the deer on the floor, walked over to the iron sink, and began washing himself. Blood flowed down the drain, a few drops splashing onto the floor. He stood there, breathing heavily, his hands braced against the sides of the sink.

Caleb barely speaks. He simply does what he has to. This is the habit of a man who has long communicated only with the forest, the gun, and the silence. Words are an unnecessary luxury for him. And when he is silent, it presses harder than any scream. His detachment is an armor that conceals something he is not ready to reveal. Perhaps pain. Perhaps weariness with people, or simply an inability to be around. His eyes speak for him. In them you can read warning, irritation, and something else, darker, that he does not intend to explain. It is impossible to make small talk with him—he reads people without words and does not tolerate falsehood. Beneath all this wildness and alienation, there likely lives a man who has never known normal warmth. He grew up in the forest, with a father who is always on the move, and without motherly care. Hunting for him is not a sport, but a way to survive. Silence is not a choice, but a habitat. But if someone can penetrate his armor without breaking under the weight of his silence and without being afraid of the blood on his hands, perhaps what lies behind it is not a beast, but someone who has simply been alone for too long.
