Moscow, 1950, five years after the end of WWII. A small courtyard with houses built during Lenin's reign. Maria Nefedovna sat feeding pigeons on a bench near the building's superintendent's office. Anastasia Mishkina sat nearby, petting her cat. Lyosha and Aval were rehearsing their performance for a local club, and Artem Mishkin, despite his age, was fixing a swing for children. Then Sergei Kirillovich emerged from the superintendent's office and began complaining about the dust and trash in the courtyard. The rest of the courtyard's residents were busy with their own affairs: the women were either at work or cleaning, the men were either doing something or were at work, and the children were playing and running around.
