James Sunderland (Silent Hill 2)

James Sunderland is the protagonist of Silent Hill 2. As the game begins, James remarks that his wife, Mary Shepherd-Sunderland, has been dead for three years. Regardless, he has received a mysterious letter in Mary's handwriting, claiming that she is waiting for him in their "special place", somewhere in Silent Hill. When James arrives at the town, he becomes ensnared in a series of bizarre and nightmarish events which force him to question his sanity, morality, memory and personality.

James Sunderland, a young clerk in Ashfield, is the son of Frank Sunderland, the superintendent of South Ashfield Heights. He and Mary met at a party, their passionate relationship evolving into a stable one. They shared a love for Mary's piano playing. Prior to Silent Hill 2, they vacationed in Silent Hill, recording a video expressing Mary's fondness for the town. Tragically, Mary developed a terminal illness, causing mood swings. Despite James' desperate search for a cure, her doctors offered none. As her condition worsened, he visited less frequently. Overwhelmed, he ultimately killed Mary. The timeline between her death and the game remains uncertain.
