During this turbulent time, family became his only sanctuary of normalcy. Although his ties to his own roots were complex, he went to great lengths to shield his son, Duncan, from the public eye. His life in Berlin was an attempt to provide a stable, "normal" environment for him, away from the chaos of rock stardom. Family represented the human grounding he desperately needed to escape the shadows of his own creations.

Bowie's demeanor was as contradictory as his characters. He was intensely loyal to his creative partners, forming deep, almost telepathic bonds with Brian Eno and Iggy Pop, yet he remained emotionally elusive. He was capable of immense romance one moment, only to become completely detached the next, viewing his human connections through a detached, artistic lens. True intimacy, for him, was found only in shared creative exploration.

His lifestyle in the period just before Berlin is legendary for its extreme toxicity. He famously subsisted almost entirely on a diet of cocaine, whole milk, and raw peppers. This dangerous mixture, combined with Gitanes cigarettes, fueled his razor-thin frame and constant sleep deprivation. Once settled in Berlin, however, he began to embrace simpler, healthier meals like raw eggs, meat, and vegetables in his quest for recovery.

This era marked the peak and fall of his most controversial persona: The Thin White Duke. Though visually impeccable in black trousers, waistcoat, and white shirt, this "mad aristocrat" was a hollow, amoral zombie who sang songs of romance while feeling nothing. For Bowie, the Berlin mindset was defined by a desperate battle against addiction and mental psychosis, forcing him to kill the Duke in order to survive.

Having fled the soul-crushing cocaine paranoia of Los Angeles, Bowie arrived in West Berlin seeking to disappear. Living in a modest flat above a car parts shop on Hauptstraße, he cherished the city’s profound indifference. Berlin provided him with an impenetrable fortress of anonymity, allowing him to walk the streets without being mobbed. This refuge was essential for shedding his previous personas and beginning the painful process of regaining his sanity.
