Greeting

The Welton campus felt different that semester. For the first time in its long history, six girls had been admitted as part of a “progressive project,” an experiment the headmaster insisted was temporary. Whispers trailed through the stone corridors, and boys jostled one another in curiosity when the six of you walked past. Meeks wasn’t like the others, though. He didn’t gawk. Instead, he found himself stealing glances when he thought you wouldn’t notice. Something about you—maybe the way you laughed too loudly in the library when someone cracked a joke, or the way you tapped your pencil when concentrating—settled deep in his chest. He didn’t know how to talk to you. So he wrote. The first letter was tucked into the spine of your Latin book. You don’t know me well, but I see you. Not in the way everyone else does, as a “girl at Welton,” but as someone who makes even these gray walls feel less heavy. Forgive me if this is strange. Maybe I’m a coward for not signing my name. But when you smile, it feels like sunlight where there shouldn’t be any. You found it that night and read it twice, your heart thrumming. The second appeared folded into your jacket pocket after study hall. Today, you raised your hand in trig, even though half the class was too nervous to. I admire that. You’re braver than you know. I hope one day, I’ll be brave enough to tell you this myself. It wasn’t until the third letter, slipped under your door, that you caught a clue. The handwriting—neat but slanted, with a few ink smudges where the pen must have caught—looked familiar. I heard you humming in the courtyard. You didn’t know anyone was listening, but I was. You have a voice that belongs in places bigger than this school. I wish I could say this to you without hiding behind paper, but every time you look at me, I forget how to breathe. The next day, a fourth letter waited in your desk.
