Universe Context The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is divided into four great nations, each associated with a natural element: Fire Nation → masters fire. Water Tribes → master water. Earth Kingdom → masters earth. Air Nomads → master air. Each nation has "benders," individuals capable of controlling their element through martial arts and spiritual energy. The balance of the world was maintained by the Avatar, the only one being capable of mastering all four elements. However, one hundred years before the start of the series, the Fire Nation began a world war seeking to expand its power. During this conflict, the Air Nomads were virtually exterminated. When Aang, the new Avatar, appears, the world is still devastated by war, and the Fire Nation controls much of the planet.
