He is a Firebending Master from the Fire Nation Royal Family, born as the Crown Prince. His story often paralleled that of Avatar Aang. Initially the main enemy of Team Avatar, Zuko's life revolved around trying to capture the long-lost Avatar to end his exile and reclaim his honor as the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation.

Zuko is easily recognized by the distinctive scar on the left side of his face, which he received at the age of thirteen in an Agni Kai against his father, Fire Lord Ozai, shortly before his banishment. The fight was the result of an incident in which he inadvertently disrespected his father by speaking out of turn and refusing to fight him.

With the support of his uncle, General Iroh, and after much struggle and internal chaos, Zuko rejected the Fire Nation ruled by Ozai and joined Team Avatar to become Aang's friend and firebending instructor in an effort to restore his honor as well as that of the Fire Nation.

Born in 83 AG, Zuko is the firstborn son of Fire Lord Ozai and Princess Ursa. From a young age, he was despised by his father and the target of manipulation by his sister Azula, who frequently tricked and ridiculed him. His mother, however, loved him and favored him over his sister. In fact, the tension between Zuko and his father actually began shortly after the prince's birth. Since the child lacked the "spark in his eyes" typical of most Firebenders, the Royal Family was unsure if Zuko was a Bender at all. Ozai, viewing a non-Bender firstborn as an "embarrassment," planned to cast his son out of the palace walls. Only when Ursa and the Fire Sages intervened did the Prince give his newborn son a chance. Later, Zuko was discovered to be a Firebender, and peace returned to the young family. When he was young, Zuko used to travel frequently to Ember Island with his family. They had a private beach house there, which they visited when they were still a happy family.

Thirteen-year-old Zuko entered a war council meeting with Ozai and some of his generals. He ignored Iroh's instructions not to speak during the meeting when a general outlined a plan to sacrifice an entire division of new recruits in a diversionary maneuver. Fiercely disagreeing with this, he saw it as a betrayal of the recruits' patriotism. The rebellious outburst was seen as a grave insult, and Ozai demanded that he participate in an Agni Kai. He agreed, unaware that he would be facing his father, not the general he had insulted. Turning to face his opponent, he immediately appeared penitent and knelt, refusing to fight, and with tears in his eyes begged his father's forgiveness. Ozai declared his refusal a sign of cowardice and further disrespect, stating that he would "learn respect and suffering would be his teacher." Ozai burned Zuko (leaving a permanent scar on the left side of his face), stripped him of his birthright, and exiled him from his beloved homeland, declaring that he could only return if he were able to find and capture the Avatar, who had vanished a hundred years earlier. It was foolish by all accounts (because if the Avatar had disappeared, there would be no point in searching for him), but Zuko clung desperately to this task as his only hope of regaining his honor and everything he had lost.

Telling him how he felt about Ozai's treatment of him and about the war, he explained his intentions to free Iroh and join the Avatar. As he was about to leave, Ozai decided to tell him about his mother's fate, causing Zuko to stop and listen. After learning that she had been banished from the Fire Nation, contrary to Zuko's belief that she had died, he was attacked by Ozai with lightning just as the eclipse ended, but Zuko successfully redirected it and escaped. Upon arriving at the prison, Zuko saw that Iroh had already escaped on his own. And once Team Avatar escaped on Appa after the failed invasion, Zuko followed them in a hot air balloon.

At the Western Air Temple, he tried to join the group to teach Aang firebending, but they rejected him for obvious reasons. He then offered himself as a prisoner, but was also refused. That night, while he slept, Zuko heard something in the woods and, acting impulsively, unleashed a blast of fire that scorched the feet of Toph, who had gone to talk to them. Toph fled, crawling and throwing rocks at Zuko, who tried to apologize for his actions. When Toph disappeared into the trees, Zuko yelled in frustration.

Although he was the main antagonist at the beginning of the series, Zuko has proven to be more of a complex individual than a true villain. At the start of the series, there's no indication that he'll become an anti-villain, but over time he evolves into a hero in his own right.

Zuko's big heart was, for most of the series, overshadowed by his desire to return to the Fire Nation. He desperately wanted to reclaim his right as heir to the Fire Nation throne, but above all, he wanted to regain his father's love, recognition, and respect. Zuko believed (or forced himself to believe) that by capturing the Avatar, his dreams would come true, which makes Aang his greatest enemy. Zuko believes that a person becomes strong by striving and fighting for what they want. He says he doesn't want good luck, as he believes he can control his own destiny. Even so, all the bad luck he has experienced in his life has led him to believe that the world is against him. This has made him someone with great determination and an iron will that even surpasses his own limits.
