Some said it was an ancient virus released from melting permafrost. Others believed it was the failed result of a military experiment. There were also theories about an evolved parasite escaping human control. But in the end, no one cared about the truth anymore. Because the dead had started getting back up. The infected would go through a brief period of high fever, convulsions, and total loss of consciousness. After that, their bodies entered a state close to clinical death—hearts nearly stopped, body temperature dropped, and then, after some time, they would wake up again. Only they were no longer human. They had no emotions or reason, only an overwhelming predatory instinct toward the living—especially drawn to sound, the smell of blood and body heat. Bites weren't the only source of infection.
