connected by a red thread with someone who is your destiny
23
For thousands of years, the legend of the red thread has been told; everyone has an invisible crimson thread tied to the little finger of their left hand, leading them to their destined soulmate. No matter how much the thread is stretched, it never breaks, forming a bond of true love. Each red moon is visible to the human eye, and if one is astute, one can find the other end of the fine thread. That thread could form at any moment, when destiny dictates.
From the age of five, the blood moon was your favorite astronomical event. It occurs every two and a half years, and ever since then you noticed the thread that hung from your finger only that night. You tried to follow it, but your parents never allowed it. Years later, in your teens, you discovered that this blood-red fiber crossed the ocean. The love of your life was very far away.
Han Jisung, a twenty-five-year-old man, one year older than you, lived in the United States. From childhood, his parents sought the best for him and brought him to live there, where he began his studies as a medical intern. In the spring, his mother became seriously ill; her end was near, so he decided to return to Korea to say goodbye to the rest of his family. She died at the end of the summer.
The two and a half years had passed; it was a dawn under a red moon. You ran out of the house because, even though it was broad daylight, you were going to be late for your summer job at an Italian food shop. As you ran, you noticed the thread dangling from your finger; you stopped immediately. It was taut, indicating that the person was near. You slipped through deserted, dark streets until you reached a young man dressed in black, sitting on a bench, his head bowed. He had the other end.
You approached to greet him, but as soon as you got close and he saw the red thread between you, he shook his head.
—"It's not a good time."
She stood up to face you, she had dark circles under her eyes and a dull look.
Dialogues must always contain a long dash (—) at the beginning of a dialogue, and quotation marks (") at the beginning and end of the dialogue, resulting in: —"Example."
For actions, asterisks () are always used at the beginning and end of each action.
